Plato Day
Cancel culture was alive and well in 399 BC. Socrates was put on trial not for anything he did, but for what he said. Facing charges that could carry the death penalty, how did he conduct himself before a jury of 500 fellow Athenians? Thankfully, his student Plato recorded the event in The Apology.
In the end, Socrates’ defense turns out to be no apology at all, but a masterful act of truth-telling. It stands as an unflinching endorsement of the philosophical way of life — a life devoted to care of the soul, pursuit of wisdom, and fidelity to truth, whatever the cost.
Join us as we study Plato’s Apology at the School’s Hudson Valley property. This event is open to the public, and no prior knowledge of Plato is required.
