 WHAT’S IN A NAME?
A Lecture by Paul Sheppard

SATURDAY, MAY 19, 2012
at 7:00 pm
12 East 79th Street, New York City

What’s in a name?  If we had no names for the countless forms we encounter every day, we could not function as we do. We could not communicate our human needs and desires, our thoughts and feelings, our questions and their answers. In short, without names we would not be who we are.
Or… would we?  Is there anything that resists being named?  Is there something — either in us or beyond us — that no name can define?  Are the names we use merely convenient fictions or do they define and differentiate real entities that make up our world?

Join us in good company as we consider these questions and explore others.

Tickets at $20 include admission, wine and light refreshment. They may be purchased here or in person in the Registration Office at 12 East 79th Street. Please call 212-744-0764 for office hours.

Please Note: Special Events tend to sell out quickly; you are encouraged to register well in advance to secure a seat. Requests for refunds may be made via email to
registration@philosophyworks.org or in person at the Registrar's Office in advance of the event, and will incur a $5 handling fee per seat.

 PLATO’S CAVE ALLEGORY
Study Day

SUNDAY, JUNE 3, 2012

12 East 79th Street, New York City

Plato’s Republic explores the essential human questions--what is our true nature, how can we discover true freedom, what sort of life leads to real and lasting happiness?  Plato’s teacher, Socrates, leads the investigation and in the process presents his Cave Allegory, one of the great masterpieces of philosophical literature.

Socrates describes prisoners chained since birth at the bottom of the cave.  Being unaware of the bright world above, the prisoners are totally convinced that shadows cast on the cave wall before them are the ultimate reality.  Moreover, Socrates insists these prisoners are just like us "for they see only their own shadows or the shadows of one another."

What shadows do we take for reality, and what are the realities we miss?  What are the chains that bind us?  How can we free ourselves?

Join us to immerse yourself in Plato’s words and explore these important questions during a day that includes an opening presentation, group study sessions, light entertainment, a great Greek lunch and more.  You are encouraged to invite family and friends.
